H2B2 has been responsible for the development and construction of the electrolyzer with which starts the first pilot project for renewable hydrogen production in Colombia. Coinciding with the presentation of the Low Carbon Hydrogen Strategic Plan of Ecopetrol, the largest company in Colombia and one of the main integrated energy companies in the Americas, the start-up of the electrolyzer was successfully carried out at the Cartagena Refinery.
The entry into operation of this 50-kilowatt PEM technology will produce 20 kg of high purity (99.999%) green hydrogen per day. To guarantee its renewable origin, the pilot will use wastewater from the refinery and 270 photovoltaic panels that will supply solar energy to the national H2B2 technology for the production of this renewable vector.
The main objective of this project is to evaluate the technical and environmental feasibility of this vector, as well as the performance of hydrogen generation in this refinery of the Group. The green hydrogen produced will serve to improve the quality of the fuels produced at the refinery, replacing the gray hydrogen currently used.
The hydrogen produced will have four applications: use in the company’s own operations, sustainable mobility, blending hydrogen with gas for thermal use, and new low-carbon products for the domestic and export markets. Florencio Ferrera, CEO of H2B2, said of the Colombian company’s ambitious strategy: “renewable hydrogen is essential to ensure the path towards decarbonization. This vector plays an important role, and H2B2 participates with cutting edge production technology”.
